Postcards, greeting cards, view cards – their history dates back to the 19th century. Before the widespread use of the internet and mobile phones, it was one of the favorite ways of communication between close people.
Nowadays, sending postcards is not as popular as it once was. However, there are still people who enjoy making others happy and are delighted themselves when they find something more than bills in their mailbox.
With such people in mind, the Postcrossing website was launched on July 14, 2005, enabling people from all over the world to exchange postcards. It was created by a Portuguese student, Paulo Magalhães, who himself loved receiving and sending cards. It's hard to believe that nearly 20 years have passed since then!
Over the years, the postcrossing.com website has become increasingly popular, and more and more people from all over the world have joined the postcard exchange project. In 2011, I joined the ranks of Postcrossers because sending and receiving postcards has always brought me great joy and happiness. Two years later, I opened a postcard shop, and one of my first projects was a card on which I wanted to include interesting facts about my country – Poland. This is how the first postcard from the “Greetings from…” series – “Greetings from Poland” – was created.
Over the following years, nearly 100 postcards with greetings from different countries around the world were created. Each postcard was designed according to a specific scheme: in the background, there is a picture of a landscape characteristic of a given country, and on this background are the most interesting facts about the presented place. We have a map with the outline of borders, information about the country’s area, the number of its inhabitants, and Postcrossers. And a whole lot of trivia that brings the given place in the world closer. The series has been loved by Postcrossers worldwide, and its popularity is evidenced by the fact that it has seen many interpretations by writing enthusiasts.
The “Greetings from…” postcards are a series of cards collected by many people around the world. Particularly valuable are cards sent from exotic countries where Postcrossing is not as popular as in Europe, Asia, or North America.
